Groupon
Web Design
A deal a day site, homepage design and brand identity.
Power in numbers, is what this site is all about. Groupon is a deal a day website, which relates to specific geographical location.
The idea behind the site is that vendors will offer a deal, discount or offer which is only granted if enough people in a 24 hour period sign up to take part in the offer. It relies on users telling their friends and friends friends. AFter 24hours a new deal is offered.
The brief was to design a simple, sleek attention grabbing site, that had the user at the center of the design. Aimed at 24- 35 year old young urban professionals in the Chicago area looking for fun and exciting new things to do and places to go.
We found inspiration in the magazine adverts of 1950s, particularly the American hard sell adverts you'd find at the backs of papers. What we liked about it was, you either collected a bunch of tokens or cut out a form and handed in to redeem an offer. So we took inspiration and visuals cues from this era of advertising and applied it to the website. Using deal flashes, cut out lines with scissor icons. A retro styled count down clock and an american mail box icon to send to a friend. The main focus of the page was the deal of the day and the comments left by users.
We also felt it important to show high up on the page the simplicity of how the deal works and placed this up the top of the page under clock, so that any user landing on the page understand the concept of the company.
